"We believe that Kim Jong Un understands the urgency. that we must do this quickly", he said of the effort to have North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons.

In North Korea, the state media has praised the summit between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump as a resounding success, while downplaying the agreement to work toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

North Korean state television has aired its first video from Tuesday's unprecedented summit between the regime's leader, Kim Jong Un, and U.S. President Donald Trump.

After almost five hours of unprecedented talks between Trump and Kim on Tuesday, the two leaders signed a document in which Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and the U.S. agreed to "provide security guarantees". Donald Trump impersonators were on hand, as was the U.S. basketball star Dennis Rodman, who turned up to support his friend Kim Jong Un, but also peddled a cryptocurrency.

"Most certainly in the president's first term", he said, speaking to a pool of journalists in Seoul, South Korea, where he was meeting his South Korean and Japanese counterparts.

Speaking at a news conference in Seoul alongside South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono, the USA secretary of state said the Trump administration would not repeat the mistakes made by past presidents that rewarded Pyongyang for denuclearization promises.

Kim Do-gyun, the South's lead negotiator who is in charge of North Korea policy at the defence ministry, told reporters before departing for the DMZ that he and Ahn would explore ways to ease military tensions and the schedule of a ministerial meeting.

But details on what form those promises would take were sparse, with critics noting the lack of a timeline for when North Korea will begin dismantling its nuclear programme. North Korea has great potential for the future!'

"Everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", he wrote on Twitter.

"There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea."
That was interpreted as meaning the USA would grant concessions to North Korea concessions along the way despite longstanding United States insistence that it would not.

"Given that this meeting is being held after a long hiatus, we will have to make it produce results", Kim, the South's top delegate, said at the start of the meeting.

North Korean state media KCNA reported Wednesday that Trump had discussed lifting sanctions against Pyongyang during his talks with Kim in Singapore.

The U.S. intelligence assessment of the nuclear and other military threat posed by North Korea to U.S. and allied forces in Asia and the northwest Pacific remained unchanged despite Trump and Moon's assertions about the North Korean nuclear threat being over, a senior U.S. official responsible for studying the North Korean military said.

Overall the South Korean foreign minister voiced strong support for the Trump-Kim declaration agreement, calling it a "historic turning point" toward peace that will bolster political momentum toward action.

The secretary insisted that Trump was clear both with Kim and in his post-summit press conference that the military exercises would only be abandoned if "productive, good-faith negotiations" are ongoing.

"It's important that we don't lose sight of the fact that Kim Jong-un is a butcher and he is a butcher of his own people", Senator John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, said on Tuesday.
