  • World Cup 2026: Edmonton likely to host matches, as North America wins bid

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is heading to North America after a joint bid from the United States, Canada, and Mexico defeated Morocco in a landslide vote on Wednesday. "New Jersey has hosted World Cup matches before and we are more than ready to do so again", Murphy said in a statement Wednesday.

"Being considered a place where major sporting events could take place, I think it adds to our cache", Ady said. "It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the USA bid".

Federation Internationale de Football Association will select up to 16 host cities from the 23 candidates proposed in the North American bid.

It may still be eight years away, but the expectation of seeing Canada co-hosting, and actually playing in, a men's World Cup is already palpable.

Bid officials have given bullish financial projections, forecasting a record-breaking multi-billion-dollar profit for the expanded tournament.

That means at least one tournament destination should be within easy driving distance for Northeast Florida fans, although tickets may be pricey.

When it kicks off in 2019, the CPL will be the first fully professional men's soccer league entirely in Canada since the original CSL folded in the early 1990s.

It's unclear at the moment how travel will shake out and how far teams will have to travel for matches. The leaders of Mexico and Canada gleefully cheered the outcome, emphasizing unity with the United States. Such a determination may not occur until at least late 2025, once teams qualify and learn their opening-round assignments.

Herdman, whose team is now tied with Lebanon at No. 79 in the world rankings, has yet to hear whether the three co-hosts will secure automatic qualification as is the norm.

Under current rules, each base camp must include a hotel and nearby training facilities. Both the opening match and the final will be played at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, along with several other matches through both stages of the tournament. One-by-one, cities from coast-to-coast started confirming their participation in the fledgling league, with excitement rising after every announcement.

The 2026 tournament will be the first to feature 48 teams, an expansion from the traditional field of 32 competitors.

Vancouver Whitecaps star Alphonso Davies, who will likely lead the Canadian line for years to come, eloquently opened the North American bid's presentation to the FIFA Congress.
