  • US, Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup as Morocco lose out

The 2018 tournament kicks off in Russian Federation on Thursday and the 2022 World Cup will be hosted by Qatar.

The 68th FIFA Congress will determine the site of the 2026 tournament, selecting from a joint North American bid submitted by Canada, the United States and Mexico, or a bid from Morocco.

Trump had earlier warned that countries voting against the North American bid would suffer consequences.

The United States last hosted the men's World Cup in 1994. The MetLife Stadium in New York City will host the prestigious World Cup final. "Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege, the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", an emotional US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said on stage after the vote.

That, along with the promise of major revenues from North American sponsors and television networks, was appealing to Federation Internationale de Football Association, an organization that has been beset by global corruption scandals, concerns over exorbitant costs related to previous tournaments, and allegations of widespread labor and human rights abuses around the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The final list will come from the 23 candidate cities across Canada, Mexico and the United States that were included as part of the bid.

"Canada, Mexico, and the United States are ready to welcome the world to North America and serve as stewards of the largest FIFA World CupTM in history".

Ryan Gaydos is an editor for Fox News.

With just two bids, the trio bid (known as United 2026) was far and away the favorite.

"We have no regrets (voting for Morocco)". Citing a number of high-profile sponsors dropping FIFA, London newspaper The Independent reported that FIFA's 2018 World Cup sponsorship revenues were down $240 million. This will be the first time since 2002 that the World Cup will be held in multiple nations.

The United States, Canada and Mexico were expected to qualify automatically for the tournament as has been the tradition for all World Cup host nations.

North America is optimistically promising to deliver $14 billion in revenue helped, while the tournament won't require major construction work required on the 16 planned stadiums, all of which already exist.

"Thank you so, so very much for this incredible honor. But when I was five years old, a country called Canada welcomed us in", he told delegates at the FIFA Congress in Moscow.

Three Canadian cities - Edmonton, Montreal, and Toronto - could potentially host matches.

Hasseltine said Monday that the focus of Baltimore's bid committee would now turn to tying up "any loose ends", from potential practice venues to the creation of green spaces in the city. And then we've got an eye on the pathway, the infrastructure, the development system to make sure that the right players arrive at the right time in 2026. "It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the USA bid".

"But I think where it had the advantage was the World Cup would be more profitable in America and it is a capitalist world".
