  • Apple Updates App Store Guidelines, Tightens Rules for Crypto-Related Apps

Apple introduced the ban after a developer released a Mac program called Calendar 2 on the app store, which contained an optional cryptocurrency mining function.

The ban applies for apps designed explicitly with mining operations in mind.

In addition, Apple has expanded its prohibition on unnecessarily expending resources, draining the battery or generating heat with a specific callout to cryptocurrency mining. In digital currency mining, each of these things is likely to take place. "Apps, including any third party advertisements displayed within them, may not run unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining".

APPLE ABSOLUTELY doesn't want people to use their iPhones to mine cryptocurrencies as has updated its developer guidelines to outlaw such activities. An app can facilitate an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) if it comes from "established banks, securities firms, future commission merchants, or other approved financial institutions".

Apple Books will be "entirely redesigned to make discovering and enjoying books and audiobooks effortless for iPhone and iPad users", explains Apple, and will debut when iOS 12 arrives this fall.

"Apps may not mine for cryptocurrencies unless the processing is performed off device (e.g. cloud-based mining)", Apple notes.

The fruit-themed device maker has now expanded its requirements. The move comes at a time when 'cryptojacking', a malware attack wherein malicious attackers scrumptiously hijack a computer or a phone's computing power to mine cryptocurrencies, is a growing menace. The updated standards should help protect App Store users and ensure the longevity of Apple devices.

"With the Health Records API open to our incredible community of developers and researchers, consumers can personalize their health needs with the apps they use every day". Essentially, "wallets" (apps that "store" cryptocurrencies) are allowed as long as they are provided by a developer "enrolled as an organization", but all cryptomining activity is now forbidden.
