Security has been tightened today around a location declared as a "special event area" related to the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The summit has officially begun, with Trump and Kim shaking hands and posing for photographs. "It's my honor and we will have a terrific relationship I have no doubt".

"The senior officials of the party and government sincerely wished Kim Jong Un good successes in the first summit meeting and talks between the DPRK and the United States and his safe return", the KCNA said.

That decision has raised concerns about the risk of holding such a monumental meeting with barely anyone to bear witness.

The two are due to meet on Tuesday on the resort island of Sentosa for their high-stakes summit, the first-ever talks between a USA and North Korean leader and the culmination of a head-spinning diplomatic dance.

Rodman has faced ridicule and criticism for his trips to North Korea, which some USA politicians and activists view as serving only as fodder for North Korean propaganda.

It's the first ever meeting between a sitting US president and North Korean leader.

The summit is not expected to last beyond Tuesday, with both leaders set to leave Singapore shortly after concluding their meetings. It's aimed at settling a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal. As the site for their meeting, the two leaders have chosen one of Singapore's most luxurious hotels, the Capella Resort on Sentosa Island, a popular vacation spot off the southern tip of Singapore and home to Universal Studios Singapore.

"Meetings between staffs and representatives are going well and quickly. but in the end, that doesn't matter", he said.

"President Moon and President Trump agreed Trump and Kim will be able to make a great achievement if the two leaders come together to find a common denominator through frank discussions", Blue House spokesman Kim Eu-kyeom told reporters.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday drew a firm line, saying the US plans to keep sanctions in place until North Korea eliminates its nuclear weapons capability.

North Korea maintains an atrocious human rights record that is inextricably linked to its weapons proliferation.

The historic first meeting between a sitting USA president and and North Korea's leader will take place Tuesday at 9 a.m. when Trump and Kin will meet alone with only translators in the room.

The North Korean autocrat's every move will be followed by 3,000 journalists who have converged on Singapore, and by gawkers around the world, up until he shakes hands with Trump on Tuesday.

There will not be a repeat of "flimsy agreements" made between previous US administrations and North Korea, Secretary Pompeo told reporters in Singapore on Monday.

"I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people", Trump said at a press conference in Canada before departing the G-7 summit for Singapore.

China has for decades been North Korea's main economic backer and there's a good chance any deal Mr Kim reaches with the USA will need tacit endorsement from Beijing.

Kim's black armored limousine with two large North Korean flags was surrounded Tuesday by police vehicles, their lights flashing, and other black cars.

It's not clear what the United States side has been able to extract from the North Koreans in terms of their willingness to get rid of their nuclear weapons or allow inspectors into the country to catalogue the scale of their program.
