After more than a day's silence on Twitter, Trump posted four tweets about trade disagreements that were the talk of the G-7 conference, followed by a quick mention of the summit he is now attending - writing "Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!" - before turning back to tweeting about trade once more.

Pompeo reiterated that the U.S. will not ease sanctions against North Korea for anything less than complete denuclearization. "The US position remains clear and unchanged".

State-run KCNA news agency heralded the summit as part of a "changed era", Reuters reported.

A cake was also on the menu for Trump who celebrates his 72nd birthday on Thursday.

"If they decide they don't like the way the negotiations are going they can send us a message", Theresa Payton, former White House Chief Information Officer under President George W. Bush and CEO of Fortalice Solutions, told FOX Business.

"We have watched the struggles, and the sacrifices and the progress of the people", he said.

Beyond the impact on both leaders' political fortunes, the summit could shape the fate of countless people - the citizens of impoverished North Korea, the tens of millions living in the shadow of the North's nuclear threat, and millions more worldwide.

The Singapore government offered itself as a neutral site for the first-ever meeting between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted the talks had been "substantive and detailed".

It's not a matter of giving or denying Trump "credit" for the meeting but about results, Wagar said. Almost 64 percent of Americans said the US should use military force to defend its Asian allies if they are facing a military conflict with North Korea.

Security is tight ahead of the summit between two unpredictable men who in the past have threatened to destroy the other's country during the stand-off over North Korea's nukes.

While the two leaders are hoping to hammer out the framework of a denuclearisation deal for the Korean peninsula, the U.S. and North Korea have yet to agree on what exactly denuclearisation would entail.

One analyst told Al Jazeera Trump will seek to promote his image as a deal-maker.

Trump spoke only briefly in public on Monday, forecasting a "nice" outcome. He sees the summit not as a means to an end, but the end itself.
