  • Taliban announce first ceasefire since 2001 to mark end of Ramadan

The Taliban announced its first-ever cease-fire with Afghan forces Saturday, accepting the Kabul government's offer to halt fighting at the conclusion of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The deputy spokesman for the Afghan president welcomed the Taliban's agreement to the government ceasefire proposal for Eid al-Fitr, expressing hope that the decision can lead to lasting peace.

In his video message, Ghani said all Afghan security forces would be instructed to stop offensive operations "only on Afghan insurgents", with ISIS, al Qaeda and other worldwide terrorist networks excluded from the ceasefire.

In past years, Mujahid said, the Taliban have instructed their fighters to abstain from attacks; but they could not announce that publicly out of fear that the government and the US military would take advantage of it and amplify attacks.

But it added that 'if the mujahideen are attacked we will strongly defend (ourselves)'.

The Taliban on Saturday agreed to a three-day ceasefire, without specifying the period, while asserting that they would continue operations against foreign troops. Hours before accepting the truce, the militants stormed military bases in western and northern Afghanistan, killing almost 40 soldiers.

The government announced a unilateral ceasefire earlier this week.

The move came days after a gathering of Afghanistan's top clerics in Kabul called for a ceasefire and issued a fatwa against suicide bombings and attacks.

It was not immediately clear when the Taliban ceasefire would begin, as Eid starts when the moon is first sighted on either the 29th or 30th day of Ramadan, and the moon appears at different times across the country.

No one immediately claimed the attack in Kot district, but both the Taliban and IS are active in eastern Afghanistan, especially in Nangarhar. "We should reach for sustainable peace throughout the country".

There was no immediate response to the Taliban's statement from the US military, which has a dual mission to support Afghan troops against the Taliban and, separately, conduct counterterrorism operations against extremists associated with the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.

"You can't end 40 years of war in a few days, but this is definitely the best chance for a peace process since at least since the US surge" of troops under President Barack Obama in 2010-2011, said Vikram Singh, a former Pentagon and State Department official who is now a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington.

Taliban overran capital Kunduz city on late 2015 for nearly 10 days, before they were driven out by Afghan special forces backed by USA aircraft.

Farhad said one soldier was wounded.

In late February, Ghani also offered the Taliban a chance to be recognized as a legitimate political party and withdraw their names from worldwide sanctions lists in exchange for peace.

However, the district administrative chief Amanuddin Qureshi confirmed the incident said doznes of Taliban insurgents launched a coordinated attack on security posts in Baghcha and Kalokh areas, leaving at least 25 people dead.

Qureshi further added that at least nine Taliban insurgents were also wounded during the clashes with the security personnel.
