The two clubs had been discussing a deal for the playmaker worth 60m euros (£52.75m) - 55m (£48.35m) plus a maximum of 5m (£4.4m) add-ons.

Nabil Fekir would be a great addition to the Liverpool FC team under Jurgen Klopp, Nick Wright has claimed.

France forward Nabil Fekir's move from Lyon to Champions League runner-up Liverpool fell through on Saturday. The veteran administrator has no concerns over the saga lingering on into France's World Cup campaign, where they have been drawn alongside Denmark, Peru and Australia in Group C.

However, Lyon said on Saturday that talks about the potential transfer of their captain "had not succeeded".

The notoriously tough negotiator has always wanted to hold onto his prized asset until after the tournament, in the hope that a bidding war will ensue should the attacker shine in Russian Federation this summer.

"Lyon is announcing that the negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the Lyon captain have not succeeded and Lyon have made a decision to put an end to the negotiations tonight at 8 p.m.", the statement read.

However, it does not look likely that any deal for Fekir will happen whilst France are in the World Cup, with Fekir being named as part of the 23 man squad that will play in Russian Federation.

The 24-year-old was being courted by Liverpool as a replacement for Philippe Coutinho, who joined Barcelona in January.

Liverpool was hoping to add Fekir to their off-season signings of Monaco midfielder Fabinho and RB Leipzig's Naby Keita.

Speculation is swirling about why the deal has not been rubber-stamped.

Fekir's agent confirmed earlier this week that although Liverpool were interested in signing his client, the deal was far from being completed.
