Chancellor Angela Merkel: Trump's rejection of G7 communique 'sobering' and 'depressing'

  • Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

In a tweet posted Saturday evening, Trump said his decision was based on "false statements" made by Trudeau during a press conference he gave, as well as "the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs" on USA companies. "Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270 percent on dairy!" the USA president tweeted.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro also ripped into Trudeau on Sunday, saying there's a "special place in hell" for a world leader that double crosses Trump.

In response, Trump attacked Trudeau on Twitter, calling him "dishonest & weak".

But, after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump struck a more affable tone and said the French leader was helping work out trade issues.

In other developments at the two-day summit, Trudeau told Trump there would be no North American Free Trade Agreement unless the US dropped its tariffs on steel and aluminum.

On Saturday, Trump arrived late for the first working session on gender equality but Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau forged ahead with opening remarks without him, commenting wryly about "stragglers".

Harper said that although he could understand the US wanting a better trade relationship with countries like China and Mexico, he can't "understand the obsession with trade relations with Canada".

But by ordering his representatives to back out of the communique, Mr Trump appeared to be asserting his oft-stated aim of upsetting the status quo whether by pulling out of the global climate accord or the worldwide nuclear deal with Iran or threats to scrap the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"We need to stand with our democratic allies", Feinstein said.

France is also standing by the G7 communique, a French presidency official said, adding anyone departing from the commitments made at the summit would be showing their "incoherence and inconsistency".

Leaders from Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the European Union and Japan attended a tense meeting this past Friday and Saturday at the G7 summit.

"He says that we are the problem with tariffs".

Trump quickly responded by personally attacking Trudeau.

Trump and Trudeau exchanged barbs after a highly contentious G-7 meeting resulted in a press conference in which Trudeau promised not to be pushed around.

The summit came in the wake of Trump announcing steel and aluminum tariffs on US allies.

He was reacting to Trudeau's declaration that Canadians would "not be pushed around" and would hit back at punishing USA tariffs on metal imports with "equivalent tariffs". "Well, the in-factual, the non-factual part of this was they have enormous tariffs", Kudlow said.

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California appeared after Kudlow on the same program and called Trump's decision to not sign the communique a "mistake".

"The European Union is brutal to the United States".

"The world as we know it, namely the USA -led rules-based multilateralism, is now in serious danger of unraveling, as illustrated at the G7 meeting", said Erik Nielsen, chief economist at Unicredit Bank.
