Before you worry that Porsche isn't Taycan care of business, the new name is actually pronounced tie-con.

The name translates loosely as "lively, young horse" from a Eurasian dialect- a nod to the firm's crest, which has featured a leaping horse since 1952.

The Taycan has been dubbed the "Tesla-slayer" by some automotive journalists.

Porsche has billed the Taycan as a track-capable EV, created to support multiple jump starts in quick succession without power loss due to battery overheating.

Despite its sports vehicle shape, the auto will have four doors.

The prancing Taycan isn't short of oomph: its 600-horsepowers can launch it from 0-to-60 mph (96km/h) in under 3.5 seconds, and it should travel over 300 miles on a single charge.

Though Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine already took a crack at it, and a small cadre of the automotive press got to drive a prototype a few miles at low speed to tease the powertrain, the Mission E electric sport sedan continues to move at a tantalizingly slow pace toward reality. Porsche executives have said that more electric cars will follow. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told us: "We will think of different options and there will be more than one, with different levels of power".

Porsche has been using the Mission E codename quite publicly for a couple years now, since the concept's first debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015.

Porsche is doubling down on electric cars, saying it will pour over €6 billion (about $7.1 million) into electromobility by 2022.

Porsche's commitment to Taycan variants comes as part of a wider investment in the brand's electrification strategy.

The future Tesla Model S rival's J1 structure is one of three new electric auto platforms being developed within Porsche's parent company, the Volkswagen Group.

To boost that range quickly, the vehicle will have 800-volt charging technology.

Porsche is talking about a 800-volt system that should allow a charge rate of up to 350 kW, which could charge the auto up to 80% in only 15 minutes.
