Mitch McConnell Cancels Senate's August Recess

  • Winning isn’t nearly enough for Democrats. They have to dominate

The Senate will now recess for one week in August instead of four, said McConnell, R-Ky.

The Kentucky Republican said that Democrats' slow-rolling executive nominees was the catalyst for cancelling recess and that the extended time in session will be spent working on confirmations and appropriations bills.

"Senators should expect to remain in session in August to pass legislation, including appropriations bills, and to make additional progress on the president's nominees", McConnell said.

"I think that there's a lot of Democrats who are quietly like 'look, this is great what he's doing, '" Gardner said. "Given his horrendous recruits, Senator McConnell is right to be terrified of Senate Democrats on the campaign trail, but whenever the GOP Congress is in session they find new ways to alienate and disgust voters", he said. It makes sense to keep all the senators in school during campaign season when your party has just one vulnerable Senate incumbent, and the Democrats have six or seven.

The new schedule could also enable their Republican challengers - many of whom hail from the private sector or state government - to have the states to themselves during the late summer stretch. Republicans have nine on the ballot.

The House of Representatives is still scheduled to be away the entire month of August.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) recently proposed similar legislation, which was also backed by Toomey and Flake, as well as by Sen.

Democrats say the number of vacancies stems directly from Republicans blocking Obama's judicial nominees during his final two years in office.

"The Senate can't walk and chew gum at the same time", Lankford said.

Democratic co-sponsors include Mark Warner of Virginia, Brian Schatz of Hawaii and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland.

In written statements, Arkansas' two US senators voiced support for the move and blamed the minority party for the Senate's slow pace.

Gardner posited that Democrats, many of whom have voiced support for Trump's harder line on trade talks, would balk at the idea of reining him in. John Boozman, a Republican from Rogers.

After a roller-coaster 2017 for the Republican-controlled Senate, which failed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act but later passed a sweeping tax bill that became law, GOP leaders have set a more modest agenda for the months leading up to the midterm elections.

"Thank God for Leader McConnell's decision to cancel August recess so that the senate can finally get to work", Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa and the Judiciary Committee chairman, wrote on Twitter.

Conservative lawmakers and groups have been pressing McConnell to keep lawmakers in session to address almost 150 federal judicial vacancies - a number Democrats attribute to GOP delaying tactics during President Barack Obama's last years in office.

Freedom Partners' James Davis said trade is a "top priority" as the groups "work aggressively to educate policymakers and others".

"Honestly, Laura, I can't see us going back to immigration this year unless there was some proposal that the president actually was OK with and said he was willing to sign".

The shift to health care is a notable strategy Democrats are hoping to capitalize on as they gear up for November's midterm elections - by reminding American voters that Republicans are "deliberately sabotaging" the health care system, as Schumer put it in his letter to McConnell.
