  • Amazon launches Echo Look in U.S., could popularize computer vision via Alexa

The new Fire TV Cube from extends the company's efforts to become the nerve center of your house by combining its entertainment ambitions more fully with its push into the smart home. Support for HDMI-CEC is also included, meaning that the Cube can control a setup via that as well, provided that the other devices support that standard.

Fire TV Cube comes with an array of eight microphones - one more than the second-generation Echo speaker released previous year - giving the device the ability to hear commands spoken from across a room. You can tell Alexa to play channel 31 and it will do it for you.

Like the Echo Show, which has a screen, the Fire TV Cube will have a visual component to some of the most common Alexa requests.

It's unclear if or when the device will be available globally, but Amazon is running a few different promotions alongside the Fire TV Cube's release.

Unlike Amazon's other entertainment-focused offering, the Fire Stick, the Fire TV Cube is meant to be hub for not just playing Netflix and Hulu, but also turning on cable TV and smart home devices. "And, it's just the beginning".

From a specifications perspective, it appears to tick all the right boxes, with 4K Ultra HD and HDR video output, multi-directional infrared capabilities and 8 microphones, HDMI/CEC support, Dolby Atmos audio, and more.

Alexa is one of the most popular and powerful personal assistants.

The Echo Look is certainly the most unique device in the wider Echo family, so it'll be interesting to see how it performs in the hotly contested smart home/speaker market. For instance, you can simply say something like "Alexa, play Billions on Showtime" to have the Fire TV Cube power up your TV and soundbar, open the Showtime app, and pick up playback where you left off. Amazon's other Fire TV devices require you to keep a separate remote handy. A feature called Style Check lets you submit two photos and get a recommendation of which outfit to go with.

Prenner says to stay tuned on those fronts.
