Earlier the Palestinian Ambassador to Argentina condemned the match between Israel and Argentina.

The match was originally slated to be played in Haifa but Israeli authorities contributed funding for it to be moved to Jerusalem, angering Palestinians further following U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of the city as Israel's capital.

Israel captured east Jerusalem, in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed the area in a move that is not internationally recognised.

The cancellation of the friendly football match between Argentina and Israel in Jerusalem al-Quds comes at a time when at least 125 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since the "Great March of Return" began in the Gaza Strip on March 30. "The democratic country and plural state [composed of Jews, Muslims and Christians], will always eagerly await the chance to receive one of the stars of Argentine sport".

The match against Israel was set to be Argentina's final warm-up game before the start of the World Cup on June 14.

Before 1948, Malha was an Arab village of about 2,000 people, but they were forced to flee in April that year when Israeli paramilitary groups attacked. Macri, however, informed Netanyahu that he would abide by rules imposed by worldwide soccer's governing body which prevent governments from interfering in such sporting decisions.

Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev received updated from the game's producer, Danny Ben Naim, on the efforts to reverse the Argentinean decision.

While Palestinian officials and activists from the grassroots Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement had appealed to Messi to not take part in what they called a political stunt, the only threat they leveled against the player was that his popularity would suffer.

"Unfortunately, we have Trojan Horses in the Knesset who give headwind to terrorism", she said.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said it was a sad morning for Israeli sports fans, including his own grandchildren.

On retuning to Argentina: "I had to leave Argentina when I was very little and there are things I miss a lot".

That has undoubtedly disrupted Jorge Sampaoli's preparation plans and it seems highly unlikely that a new friendly will be scheduled in time before the Argentina squad heads to Russian Federation.

Reportedly, the game between was cancelled when Messi refused to go there and said he is a human before a footballer.
