  • Apple's iOS 11.4 Update Finally Delivers on Last Year's Promises for HomePod iMessage

After facing much scrutiny from its shareholders for the addictive quality of its devices, Apple announced that it will be releasing software that helps iPhone users monitor how much time they spend on their devices.

Apple's News app now has a sidebar, the Stocks app has been redesigned showing stock performance all day (with Apple News also included), Voice Memos is heading to the iPad, and finally, iBooks (now Apple Books) will receive a "dramatic" redesign. "And the number of times I picked up the phone were too many".

Apple also will give users reports on how much time they spend on apps and what gets them to check them constantly.

Apple also announced "Do Not Disturb During Bedtime", a tool that chokes off most traffic to the phone during sleeping hours.

Siri will also take note of your habits, and suggests users to order their regular coffee in the morning if you're prone to that caffeine fix, or suggest you text your boss if they're late for a meeting.

Welcome to 2018, when tech companies hold major press events to introduce innovative ways to use their products less.

The update comes as Apple tries to extend AR experiences to a broader population, rather than just hard-core, tech-savvy users.

Apple Inc. introduced features to help iPhone users put down their phones - at least temporarily - after criticism over claims people were addicted to the company's flagship device and following similar moves to combat smartphone addiction by competitors.

He also said Apple would crack down on so-called "fingerprinting", in which data companies identify specific devices by creating a unique fingerprint based on a device's particular configuration settings, installed fonts and plug-ins. That may sound a bit vague, but tests appear to show that this will actually let a another person register a second face for Face ID.

Apple isn't alone in this effort. The app uses a series of notifications to let kids know when their time is about to expire.

One of the more comedic highlights of the whole presentation was when Apple threw some serious shade at Facebook's sketchy tracking practices.

"We've never been focused on usage as a key parameter". He continued: "We're empowering people with the facts that will allow them to decide themselves how they want to cut back".

Apple is taking a swipe at ubiquitous "share" buttons created by Facebook and others to track your behavior online regardless of whether you click on them. "If developers add Siri shortcuts to their existing iOS apps, the quantity and quality of voice-enabled apps for the Apple ecosystem - including iPhone, CarPlay, Apple Watch and HomePod - will greatly increase".

Cook has become a public advocate for privacy, calling it a "fundamental human right".

With a huge year behind it and another on its way, we expect this to be one of the more compelling WWDC keynote events in recent memory.

"All of these things are great conveniences of life", he said. "I think most people are not aware of who is tracking them, how much they're being tracked and sort of the large amounts of detailed data that are out there about them".
