  • Syria's President Assad 'to visit North Korea'

The full agenda for the summit was not yet announced.

If confirmed, this is likely to be the first time the North Korean leader is meeting a counterpart in Pyongyang. The Russian leader said Moscow has "big hopes" for the success of the meeting set for June 12.

Critics have started invoking the Iran nuclear deal that Trump recently exited as a cautionary tale.

A senior United States official, who declined to be identified, quoted a report by South Korea's Yonhap news agency on Sunday which said all three of the North's top military officials were believed to have been replaced.

Nobel Prize winning anti-nuclear campaign group ICAN has offered to pay for the cost of the historic summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump, including the hotel bill for the impoverished state's leader.

Two anonymous U.S. officials told the Washington Post the Trump administration is "seeking a discreet way" to pay Mr Kim's hotel bill ahead of the meeting.

His comments reportedly came as he received the credentials of North Korean ambassador Mun Jong-nam.

"President Trump shaking up the game through his public letter on May 24 [canceling the North Korea summit] can be a part of a plan to brush off China", said Jung Chang-hyun, a North Korea and modern Korean history expert. The official handed him a letter from Kim Jong-un.

Pompeo also explained that Japan would extend economic support if the abduction, nuclear and missile issues are resolved in a comprehensive manner and Japan-North Korea relations are normalized, the sources added.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is meeting Trump at the White House on Thursday to advocate for his country's interests at the talks. North Korea's leadership is believed to regard nuclear weapons as crucial to its survival. So bringing it up could make it harder to make progress on eliminating North Korea's weapons program. He invited a North Korean defector to Congress, and harshly criticized the North Korean regime as a "cruel dictatorship".

The US president has revived the meeting after scrapping it a week earlier.

"We're all hoping the president will succeed and rooting for peace", Senate Minority Leader Charles SchumerCharles (Chuck) Ellis SchumerSchumer: Trump lawyers' argument that he can't obstruct justice would be valid in a dictatorship Don't blame Trump for gas Corker's Senate seat is up for grabs - and Republicans are anxious MORE (D-N.Y.) told reporters on a conference call.

While Kim could decide to stay the night, or maybe even two, he might also be in a hurry to get back home, in which case the North wouldn't need a room so much as a base camp.

Trump wants North Korea to "denuclearize" in return for relief from economic sanctions.
