ARM's New Cortex-A76 CPU Core Promises 35% Increase in Performance

  • Arm reveals 2019 chip tech to oust Intel from ultraportables

Our new client IP platform solution for 2019 has generated a level of excitement within our ecosystem which I have never seen during my 5+ years at Arm thanks to the possibilities it offers for increased productivity, immersive AR/VR and gaming, AI/ML, and UHD 8K viewing experiences on more devices. The main design centres for Cortex-A series of CPUs are found in Austin, Texas; Cambridge, the United Kingdom, and Sophia-Antipolis in the south of France near Nice. More technical details about the new GPU can be read here. Cortex-A76 is the second-generation premium core in the DynamIQ big.LITTLE combination.

The Cortex A76 presents itself a solid generational improvement for Arm. It's rare for IP claim to be able to do this as it represents a great resource and time investment and if it weren't for the Sophia design team taking over the steering wheel for the last two generations of products it wouldn't have been reasonable to execute.

Arm has introduced its Cortex-A76 CPU, a new microarchitecture enabling 35% more performance and 40% less power, and the ARM Mali-G76 GPU and Mali-V76 VPU to deliver "laptop-class performance" for mobile devices including smartphones and Arm-based Windows notebooks.

Key to the new performance heights is the "wide execution engine", claims Arm, as well as a dual texture mapper, preloading optimisations, and cache improvements.

A higher performance Arm CPU would be major boost for Microsoft and its current Windows 10 on Arm "always connected" hardware partners, HP, Lenovo, and Asus. The A76 drives performance up but on every step of the way it still deeply focused on power efficiency which means we'll get to see the best of both worlds in end products. Starting from a clean sheet allowed the designers to remove bottlenecks throughout the design and to break previous microarchitectural limitations.

Arm highlights the fact that it could easily ramp up performance if energy efficiency wasn't a concern but it has still managed to "bridge the performance gap without compromising on efficiency".

The new Cortex-A76 promises an even larger 35% increase in performance compared to last year's Cortex-A75. In addition to this, it offers around 4x compute performance gains for handling AI and machine learning workloads. The processor will have a maximum clock speed of 3GHz for better performance.

Called the Cortex-A76, the CPU is built on the same v8.2 architecture as its predecessor but features a brand new microarchitecture designed for extreme performance and power efficiency. This company is ARM. Arm's processor engineers worked with a design goal of outperforming their competitor's designs, but with half the area and power.
