Turkey slams U.S. veto of United Nations resolution on Palestinians

  • U.S. Ambassador to the UN Haley speaks with Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danon before a Security Council vote on an Arab-backed resolution for protection of Palestinian civilians during a Security Council meeting at U.N headquarters in New York

Kuwait presented the draft two weeks ago, initially calling for an global protection mission for Palestinians, as Israeli forces killed dozens of peaceful protesters in Gaza.

Then diplomats said it would be delayed and now the council is scheduled to vote at 3:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) on Friday.

The United States on Friday vetoed a Kuwaiti-drafted United Nations Security Council resolution that would have asked for measures to protect Palestinians.

The United States has backed Israel completely on the Gaza issue.

A draft resolution requires nine votes to be adopted in the 15-member council and no veto from the five permanent members - the UK, China, France, Russia and the US.

Earlier, US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley had said that the United States will "unquestionably veto" UN Security Council's draft resolution calling for global protection of the Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the West Bank after scores were killed near the border with Israel.

Both the USA and Kuwaiti ambassadors said their nations had proposed press statements on the Israeli-Palestinian issue that had been blocked in recent weeks.

After consultations with Europeans, the draft was amended and in its final version urged "the consideration of measures to guarantee the safety and protection of the Palestinian civilian population in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including in the Gaza Strip".

Kuwait presented its draft two weeks ago, initially calling for an global protection mission for the Palestinians as protests turned violent on the Israeli-Gaza border.

The US draft would have condemned Hamas for the recent escalation after firing a barrage of rockets into Israel on Tuesday.

Egyptian mediation efforts successfully restored the cease-fire that has largely held since the end of a 50-day war between Israel and Gaza resistance groups in 2014.

The Security Council has been deeply divided over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A 21-year-old Palestinian woman volunteering as a rescue paramedic died after being shot in the chest as by Israel fire as she provided first aid to those wounded in Friday's Gaza border protests, numbering in the dozens, local media reported.

Only the United States voted in favour of the second draft resolution, while there were three negative votes and 11 abstentions.

It would be the second time that Haley has resorted to United States veto power to block a United Nations measure on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Israelis have also accused Hamas and its militant affiliates in Gaza of using the protests as cover for sending attackers into Israel.
