  • Singapore Airlines announces dates of the world's longest flight

The 8,277 nautical mile (15,329 kilometer) flight from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey with 161 business class and premium economy seats will eclipse the 7,843 nautical mile Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Auckland as the world's longest, according to airline data provider OAG. Onboard, the aircraft will be configured with 67 business class seats and 94 premium economy seats, similar to the initial configuration of the airline's A340-500s used in the early years of the SIN-EWR route.

Singapore Airlines is the world's first customer for the new A350-900ULR, with seven on firm order with Airbus.

The company said its new ultra-long-range A350 is designed with passenger comfort in mind, featuring higher ceilings, larger windows, an extra-wide body, lighting that should reduce jet lag, and improved cabin air quality.

This is not a new route for Singapore Airlines.

The first flight will take off from Singapore's Changi Airport on October 11, and arrive at Newark Liberty Airport almost 19 hours later.

Goh Choon Phong, CEO of Singapore Airlines. That service was scrapped in 2013 as rising fuel costs made the route unprofitable.

SIA, which is the launch customer for the A350-900ULR, has seven of the planes on order.

Singapore Airlines confirmed on Wednesday that it's going to relaunch its nonstop service between NY and Singapore in October.

The route will fly to Newark Liberty International Airport in NewYork, USA from Singapore. Singapore will deploy its new fleet of next-generation, carbon-composite Airbus A350-900ULR airliners for the flight. The airline serves its other US destinations via five European and Asian cities with fifth freedom flights from Frankfurt, Manchester, Seoul, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

The current longest flight available from the United Kingdom is Quantas Airways' London Heathrow to Perth offering.

Singapore also plans to deploy its A350-900ULRs from Los Angeles for non-stop Singapore flights, but says those details will be announced at a later date.
