After a back-and-forth dance with North Korea, President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the June 12 summit is back on.

Trump made the announcement, just a week after he had said he was canceling the Singapore summit, following a more than hour-long meeting with a top North Korean official who delivered a letter from the North Korean leader.

He says, "The process will begin on June 12 in Singapore".

The comments by Japan's defence chief marked a sharp contrast with his South Korean counterpart, who said there was no reason to doubt the sincerity of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Trump's is the latest administration to inherit a decades-long crisis on the Korean Peninsula, where North Korea technically remains at war with its USA -backed rival since their 1950s conflict.

Trump indicated that the campaign of "maximum pressure" was at least on hold, vowing no new sanctions while talks are ongoing. The US leader said the missive was "very nice" - but then admitted he had not yet read it.

Kim Yong Chol arrived in Washington from NY, where he met with Pompeo on preparations for the planned June 12 encounter between the USA and North Korean leaders in Singapore.

He also said "we talked about ending the war", suggesting a formal conclusion of hostilities stemming from the Korean War in the 1950s could be a result of the Singapore summit.

But the United States would need to circumvent its own sanctions against the rogue nation. In this way, the video is an unusual admission of the poor state of North Korea's economy and the helplessness of its leadership.

"We're going to deal", Trump told reporters moments after the meeting ended. The official, Kim Yong Chol, posed for photos with Trump outside the Oval Office, and they talked amiably at Kim's auto before he was driven away. He is the most senior North Korean to visit the White House in 18 years, a highly symbolic sign of easing tensions after fears of war escalated amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests last year.

Kim Jong Un, however, has indicated he may indeed be willing to end his nuclear program and has already demolished his only known nuclear testing site last week as a gesture that he sought peace with the U.S. That same day, however, Trump canceled the talks after North Korea issued a fiery statement criticizing Vice President Mike Pence for threatening Kim Jong Un's life.

He added: "I may be in for a big surprise, folks". North Korea's conciliatory response to that letter appears to have put the summit back on track.

"I purposely didn't open the letter".

Pompeo said on Thursday that, after what have now been two meetings with Kim Jong Un and three with Kim Yong Chol, he believes the North is at least ready to consider addressing U.S. demands for denuclearization.

Kim Yong Chol left his hotel in New York City early Friday for the trip to Washington in a convoy of SUVs.

Kim Yong Chul, who till now was under U.S. sanctions, is likely to stay in the country till tomorrow.
