During an interview with syndicated talk show host Laura Ingraham on Thursday after Trump announced the pardon, D'Souza characterized prosecutors in the case as a "team of goons" who gave him a disproportionate sentence.

"I've always felt he was very unfairly treated", Trump said.

"Lawmakers must act now to close New York's double jeopardy loophole and ensure that anyone who evades federal justice by virtue of a politically expedient pardon can be held accountable if they violate NY law". Saucier was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, three years of supervised release and community service.

D'Souza was born in Mumbai and became a naturalized US citizen in 1991.

A straw donor is a person who illegally uses another person's finances to make a political contribution in their own name.

D'Souza allegedly coordinated donations to Long's campaign through friends and acquaintances.

In a statement on Thursday, Common Cause president Karen Hobert Flynn argued that Trump's decision to pardon D'Souza demonstrates once again the president's "contempt for the rule of law".

Blagojevich's wife, Patti, subsequently said on Twitter that she plans an appearance on Fox News this evening. At the time, the legal limit for an individual contribution was $5,000. They were all prosecuted by district attorneys who are now Trump antagonists in the ongoing probe of whether the president colluded with Russian Federation and obstructed justice. "We had a 10-minute conversation and basically President Trump said I'm signing this in the morning".

D'Souza came in for criticism recently for a tweet mocking student survivors of the February 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Trump also said he is considering commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat who tried to sell President Barack Obama's former US senate seat.

"And he's a powerful voice for freedom, systematically dismantling the lies of the Left-which is why they hate him", Cruz wrote.

But the judge in D'Souza's case called claims of political persecution "nonsense" during the trial.

Who is Dinesh D'Souza?

In addition to the five people pardoned, Trump has granted one commutation since taking office.

Trump is moving to grant pardons much more quickly than his most recent predecessors.

Last month, Trump also pardoned Scooter Libby, a former aide to vice president Dick Cheney who was prosecuted by Fitzgerald for lying to investigators and obstruction of justice. D'Souza retweeted Trump's tweet but did not comment otherwise.

They said D'Souza was "exploiting the fact that he happens to be an outspoken critic of President Obama in a baseless attempt to avoid criminal prosecution".

Giuliani justified Trump's actions, pointing out that a president has the authority to pardon anyone without using any formal process at all.
