However, earlier today the club announced that "it has put its new stadium project on hold".

Former Chelsea chief executive Trevor Birch has told BBC Radio 4 he believes the delay in renewing Roman Abramovich's visa has left the club facing a period of uncertainty.

Chelsea's plans of a stadium redevelopment of Stamford Bridge have come to a halt as Roman Abramovich has pulled the plug on a £1bn scheme due to his visa renewal problems, according to The Guardian. "No further pre-construction design and planning work will occur", the club website statement said.

Although the "unfavorable investment climate" could be a reference to Brexit, it is thought more likely that it is due to Theresa May's government's stance on Russian investors in the wake of the Skripal case.

But it is understood that Abramovich's decision will have no impact on the running of the football team.

Talks have been held regarding replacing Conte with Sarri, but Chelsea have been unwilling to pay compensation to Napoli after the Italian club appointed Carlo Ancelotti.

Chelsea was looking to build the new stadium on its current Stamford Bridge site in west London, and planned to moved in by 2021.

Having already failed to secure Champions League football for next season, stadium expansion at Chelsea was considered essential to keep pace with their major rivals in the Premier League.

The potential for tumult at Stamford Bridge is now of a different magnitude. He applied for a new one, but it was not granted.

Abramovich withdrew his United Kingdom visa renewal application after British authorities held it up for several weeks due to tighter vetting of the applicants' sources of wealth, the Financial Times newspaper cited a person close to the oligarch as saying Thursday.

But insiders insisted that Courtois has made it clear he does not want to discuss new terms until after the World Cup, so talks have actually not yet started.
