  • The Active Shooter game has been removed from Steam after received an angry blacklash

On Tuesday afternoon, Valve sent Q13 News a statement saying it has removed the developer responsible for the game from Steam. Although one might, like the developer, point to titles like Postal as games with far more disturbing content the fact that Active Shooter was announced so soon after the most recent school shooting in the US points to the overall "troll" like behaviour of the developer. Berdiyev, meanwhile, was previously booted from Valve' platform after releasing a game called Piccled Ricc based on an episode of Cartoon Network's "Rick and Morty".

Ryan Petty, father of 14-year-old victim Alaina Petty, has also condemned the game as insensitive and inappropriate.

So unless the developers take the game down, experts say it's really up to parents to keep it out to the hands of their kids. But various studies on games and violent crime, including one from the University of Texas in 2011, have indicated no correlation or the opposite holding true - such as higher rates of video game sales coinciding with a drop in crime.

Parents and student survivors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School were disgusted over the video game, CBS Miami reports.

In the 90s, it was common for lawmakers to attempt to lay the blame for such shootings at the hands of video games, claiming that the people that carried them out had been socialised by their violent content.

Other US officials had also expressed concern. She pointed to the video game "Hatred" which allowed players to act out mass killings.

Indeed, notorious 2015 game Hatred is still for sale on Steam, in which the player graphically murders as many random civilians as possible.

It wasn't the reach that anxious people but it provided a clear example of a video game that almost everyone is calling inappropriate. In it, it's noted that the developer has a history of creating shady games. "Many will likely be shocked to learn what games their children have downloaded and play without their knowledge".

Another game without the lofty intentions of Super Columbine Massacre RPG! is School Shooter: North American Tour 2012, a Half-Life 2 mod by Jaime Lombe.

In response to the controversy, Valve has issued a statement on the game and its developer.
