It's a Winning Return for Serena Williams at the French Open

Serena Williams attended the recent royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle rather than play in the Italian Open, an important clay-court tuneup for the French Open. This year's Roland Garros tournament marks Williams' return to Grand Slam tennis after giving birth to her daughter last year.

But her attire was the main focus at Roland Garros as Williams took to the court in an all-black Nike "catsuit".

Williams is just getting back on to the court after giving birth to her daughter last September.

It was a far from easy first Grand Slam appearance back for the American, but she closed out a hard-fought win in two tight sets.

After trailing 3-0 in the tiebreaker, she reeled off six points in a row.

The 36-year-old has a tricky matchup with 17th-seeded Ashleigh Barty in the second round.

Pliskova also broke to tie the game at 3-3.

Neither player had been broken until that point with world No. 70 Pliskova refusing to be unnerved by her star opponent, firing down 10 aces in a tightly contested opener. This was first match on the terre battue since losing the 2016 French open final to the then first-time champion Garbine Muguruza. Time management means more to her now.

"I feel like a warrior in it, like a warrior princess kind of, queen from Wakanda maybe".

A reporter wanted to know whether Williams believes she can win the title again.

She had deliberately held back from a return, skipping Rome and Madrid, in order to make sure she was ready to compete on what is her least natural surface, training at the academy belonging to her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

Arriving on Philippe Chatrier Court in a black catsuit, offset with a pinkish-red waistband, Williams saved a break point in the 12th game to send the opener into a tiebreak.

"Last time I won a round was three years ago and I actually battled an injury". But what every mother around the world does not have in common with Williams is trying to juggle all those demands while attempting to get back into tip-top shape in order to win Grand Slam titles.

"We designed it way before the movie", she said, "but still, it kind of reminds me of that".

This was also her first match since the hoopla over her seeding and tennis's attitude towards new moms.

But as the match wore on, and rust fell from the American's game, she single-mindedly imposed her will. "I think there is a donation to charity for each ace, so both of us helped".

Beginning his bid for a record-extending 11th championship at Roland Garros, Nadal needed to erase four set points to close things out Tuesday.
