That led to the new anthem policy, which stipulates teams can face a fine if any member of the organization on the sideline doesn't stand during the national anthem.

"I think the people pushed it forward". There are some big, complicated issues that we're all struggling with, and our players are on the front lines. "I understand it, though, I don't like it, but I understand it and what they're trying to protect - they're trying to protect the shield". There will be no club fines or suspensions or any sort of repercussions. Teams will have the option of fining the offender.

The NFL did not previously have a policy regarding the national anthem.

The kneeling controversy has cost the National Football League a lot of money over the last couple of years, and will continue to do so, until team owners get their players fully in line. "Personnel who choose not to stand for the Anthem may stay in the locker room until after the Anthem has been performed", Goodell said in a statement.

Trump had been vocal about players kneeling to protest social injustices.

Multiple owners have donated money to Trump, including Jones, the Patriots' Robert Kraft, Redskins' Dan Snyder, Jaguars' Shad Khan, Texans' Bob McNair, Rams' Stan Kroenke, Browns' Jimmy Haslam, Buccaneers' Edward Glazer, and then-Jets owner Woody Johnson.

The league has adopted a new policy which mandates that players and personnel have to "stand and show respect for our flag and the anthem" or be fined.

So when asked about the NFL's new national anthem policy, Kerr wouldn't hold back when talking to Anthony Slater of The Atlantic. "He's going to say, 'That guy that disrespects our flag, he's fired.' And that owner, they don't know it [but] they'll be the most popular person in this country". Other players followed suit, and many fans balked.

The kneeling began with quarterback Colin Kaepernick who did so to protest police brutality throughout the nation. Kaepernick was not on any National Football League roster previous year.

The event was planned by the NAACP, the Justice League of New York City, the National Action Network and the Women's March. You shouldn't be there.

More from Yahoo Sports:• Trump: Maybe NFL protesters "shouldn't be in the country"Charles Robinson: What did the NFL hope to gain from Kaepernick poll? Marshall added that while he doesn't like the league's new anthem policy, he understands why it was put in place.

He's also criticized Trump's travel ban and accused the president of having "routinely used racist, misogynist, insulting words". It's a representation of what we're about, which is diversity, peaceful protest, the right to free speech.
