Danica Patrick's racing career came to a crashing end on Sunday when her vehicle slammed nose first into a wall before the midway point of Indianapolis 500.

Patrick then spun into the outside wall of Turn 2 on lap 68 of 200, having dropped her left-front tyre over the white line, but was at a loss to explain the crash. The 36-year-old was able to climb out of the vehicle under her own power before making a visit to the medical center.

However, a year ago Patrick retired from NASCAR, finishing her tenure at the 2018 Daytona 500. Her highest finish in a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race was sixth in Atlanta in 2014, and she had seven top 10s in her five full-time NASCAR seasons that were all behind the wheel of the No. 10 auto for Stewart-Haas Racing.

Patrick has been a polarizing figure, and that only increased when she moved from IndyCar to NASCAR.

"I'm a little sad", Patrick said. The rest of the field managed to miss Patrick as she came to rest on the grass. I couldn't imagine winning a race in front of this many people.

She was in very good spirits early in the race, when she started on the inside of Row 3 and was running near the top 10. Bourdais had led at least one lap in every race this season, and led for the first time in his career at Indianapolis. "Now it's not just a hope, it's more of a reality that I've really got a shot at it".

Patrick stood stoically behind her bright green race vehicle during pre-race pageantry, with boyfriend and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, her parents and sister by her side. He posted throughout the day about the race, and he even streamed the whole event from inside his auto.

"I've had a lot of good fortune here and did still have some this month".

In IndyCar, she became the first woman to lead the Indianapolis 500 in her first appearance in the race in 2005. "We're just going to be glad when it's over". She was surrounded by autograph-seekers all month, and she got one of the loudest ovations during driver introductions Sunday.

"I'm not really sure what happened", she said. After last season, she announced her retirement with plans to compete in this year's Daytona 500 and Indy 500.
