Lewis Hamilton's hopes of a move to Ferrari could be scuppered by Vettel

Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel lapped the street circuit in 1m11.039s, 0.229s behind Ricciardo; while Lewis Hamilton, who seemed to be in close contention against Ricciardo at one point, lost time in the final stages of Q3 and finished within half a second of the Red Bull behind Vettel.

Vettel, whose teammate Kimi Raikkonen starts fourth and ahead of Mercedes's Valtteri Bottas, said Ricciardo had "owned" the qualifying session.

"It's frustrating with such a fast auto not to have both cars on the front row of the grid".

He countered an earlier pit stop from Hamilton's Mercedes but on lap 29 reported a drop in power in his Red Bull Renault.

There had been a glimmer of hope for Verstappen as his Red Bull was sacked up five minutes into Q1 but it was quickly shut off again when oil was spotted coming from the gearbox. That is a question for him, and whether he wants to continue racing or change teams.

"There needs to be quite a massive mistake to get past". The display eventually came back, but the tyre problems persisted and it soon became clear that only a mistake from the auto in front would result in an overtaking opportunity.

"I think I can show more emotion today than yesterday", Ricciardo (pictured diving into the swimming pool to celebrate at the Red Bull Energy Station) said of his first win in Monaco. We got it back.

Explaining how he managed his lack of power during the race, Ricciardo says the biggest challenge was looking after his brakes to prevent his rears from failing.

Vettel mentioned his battles with Hamilton, and beforehand Fernando Alonso, have given him probably the most enjoyment over time. "I'm pumped, it's been a good few days".

And in the home of the high rollers, Webber is backing Aussie countryman Ricciardo to be on the top step of the podium tomorrow with a maiden Monaco win. Thanks everyone for the support. The incident left debris scattered across the braking zone, but the marshals were able to clear the pieces of carbon fibre under a virtual safety vehicle, meaning a full safety auto - which would have allowed Vettel to close on the back of Ricciardo - was not required.

Hamilton, 33, and Mercedes claimed at their Silverstone auto launch back in February that his contract extension was likely to be rubber-stamped before the season-opening race in Melbourne. A slightly longer than normal pit-stop and a mid-race flat-spot delayed him, but he kept it on the road to finish 14th.

Pole-sitter Ricciardo got off to a clean start and managed to maintain his lead ahead of Vettel and Hamilton.
