At 5am EDT Saturday morning, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was moving north-northeastward toward the Yucatan Channel and was centered about 95 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.

Alberto is likely to bring flooding and torrential rains to both states, according to the Miami Herald and Clarion Ledger, and a tropical storm watch has been issued for Florida's panhandle west of Gulf County.

A flash flood watch has been issued for every coastal county in the Mobile office's jurisdiction - an area that includes Escambia and Santa Rosa counties and stretches from Northwest Florida to MS - beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday and running to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

About 130 to 250 millimetres of rain are possible along affected areas in eastern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, western Tennessee and the western Florida Panhandle.

All 67 Florida counties were issued the emergency notice to give state and local governments enough time and resources to prepare, Florida Governor Rick Scott said in a statement. Alberto, as a subtropical storm, has some warm and some cold in its core.

Here is the latest on Subtropical Storm Alberto as of the 4PM on Saturday.

On the forecast track, the center of Alberto is expected to move near the western tip of Cuba this afternoon.

The current wind forecast brings a small chance of tropical storm force winds into eastern parts of the area, especially along the MS coast.

The National Hurricane Center has taken Louisiana out of the cone of where they believe Subtropical Storm Alberto will make landfall.

Alberto's projected storm track has shifted eastward since Friday, lessening its threat to the active oil production areas in the Gulf of Mexico.

Subtropical Storm Alberto - the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season - was roiling parts of coastal Mexico and Cuba with rip currents and unsafe surf on Saturday.

Maximum sustained winds were near 40 miles per hour with higher gusts. But the broad storm system is expected to bring heavy rains across the entire northern Gulf Coast starting well before landfall.

"So we need to really be careful with that rainfall", Graham said. The NWS said a flash flood watch would be in effect from Saturday evening through Tuesday evening for southeastern MS, much of southern Alabama, and the western Florida Panhandle.

"Tomorrow evening we are going to start seeing an increase of cloud cover as Tropical Storm Alberto nears the gulf coast", said National Weather Service meteorologist Holly Allen.

Strong to severe storms will also be possible embedded in the rain on Sunday.
