Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova insisted today that the French Open was right not to hand Serena Williams a special seeding for the event.

Williams, who is expected to play in her first major since returning from maternity leave, should also receive a top seed that befits the No. 1 ranking she held when she left the tour, the players say.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion's last appearance on clay was in the final at Roland Garros in 2016 when she lost to Garbine Muguruza.

"It's wrong", Chris Evert, who won 18 grand slams of her own, told ESPN. In 1992, Courier only played the Italian Open before the French Open, and won his first title in Rome. It's about protecting the field too.

The 6-foot-6-inch 21-year-old managed to take a set off Nadal on clay this year and his aggressive, serve-based game offers a contrast to Nadal's brutal baseline play.

Just in time for her return to Roland-Garros in Paris, the Nike Women's Blazer Mid SW will release May 24 in limited quantities via Nike SNKRS. "I'm coming back to win", she said defiantly in a HBO documentary "Being Serena" which aired last week.

"I think it's more of a protection for women to have a life", Williams said.

"It's such an incredible effort for a woman to come back from physically, emotionally".

Last weekend, Williams was a guest at the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

That will automatically result in Serena Williams being unseeded.

"The WTA could put this issue on the table ... this is an issue that should be at a boardroom discussion".

"It's always special when I come back to Paris where I have had so many wonderful moments". Serena may play differently now that she is a mother, but she still deserves to have a seeding.

Dr Elizabeth Tindle, an expert in sports psychology from the Queensland University of Technology, backed Williams to climb up the rankings quickly if she is fully fit.

Serena had a tough time giving birth.

"If you're like finished or you stopped because you're going to have a child and you will be in top eight, I think you should have this kind of thing, to have protected seeding", Svitolina said.

"This past year, the WTA made adjustments in order to align a player who is out for pregnancy with a player who is out for a long term injury", they said.

In Wimbledon, like in all the other tournaments on the women's side, the seeding formula is authomatically given by the player's ranking.

Tipped as one of the few men in the draw capable of beating Rafa Nadal at Roland Garros this year, rising South Korean talent Chung Hyeon was forced to pull out of the French Open with an ankle injury Wednesday.
