DOJ Says Watchdog Will Look Into Trump Campaign Surveillance

  • President Trump is seen here speaking at the White House

President Trump tweeted up a storm over the weekend- writing, "I hereby demand that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump campaign for political purposes-and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama administration".

The White House has not yet publicly responded to Rosenstein's response.

Trump also wants to know if the supposed infiltration was ordered by President Barack Obama's administration.

What does the new expanded probe involve?

"As always, the Inspector General will consult with the appropriate U.S. Attorney if there is any evidence of potential criminal conduct", DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement to Fox News.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein made the request for the DOJ IG to intervene.

Rosenstein released a statement Sunday that read, "If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action".

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coates was also present. "After that meeting, they've done nothing but leak and leak and leak".

The inspector general will expand his probe into the handling of investigations during 2016 election season to include any "irregularities" involving FBI or Justice Department "tactics" - language vague enough to be essentially meaningless. Comey later testified to Congress that internal reviews found no information to support the president's tweets.

The president demanded the investigation because he believes the FBI did more than monitor his staff for possible Russian influence.

Was there a mole inside the Trump team?

Benjamin Wittes, whom former FBI Director James Comey showed memos of his meetings with Trump, wrote in a series of tweets that the president's push to investigate the FBI is "nakedly corrupt".

The New York Times reported Friday that a confidential intelligence source interacted with Trump campaign advisers George Papadopoulos and Carter Page.

The Washington Post called him "a longtime USA intelligence source", and said he met with a third campaign adviser - Sam Clovis - as well as Page and Papadopoulos. News, CNN, and the Washington Post have coverage.

What's likely to happen next? She said the officials will "review highly classified and other information they have requested", but did not provide additional detail.

Some Democrats are deeply unhappy. "Never mind that DOJ has warned that lives and alliances are at risk".

What is the informant's connection to Mueller?

Trump's simmering anger over Special Counsel Robert Mueller's year-old Russian Federation probe appeared to spill over into a series of well-worn recriminations in several tweets, including that the investigation was politically motivated and had its roots in the administration of his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama.

The revelation follows days of speculation as to the identity of the FBI's informant after the organisation admitted last week to sending an agent to gather information on the campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

But it remains unclear how the informant first came by the information that led to his meetings with Mr Papadopoulos and Mr Page - and his wider role as an Federal Bureau of Investigation informant.

Papadopoulos was charged past year in Mueller's investigation and pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI. Mr Mueller is a Republican.
