  • Han Solo and Chewbacca in Solo A Star Wars Story

Well, the wraps are now coming off.

In contrast to that, there are some critics that don't like the movie.

With "Star Wars" story films as opposed to the nine "Star Wars" saga films that dealt with the Skywalker family, the assumption is that you have lots of questions.

The bar was set high for Ehrenreich, who steps into Harrison Ford's shoes to play the young Han Solo, but his efforts paid off. It's Howard's more workmanlike, less antic sensibility that infuses "Solo" and, in many cases, drags it down, with the few remaining traces of quippy, flippant humor either falling flat or sounding hopelessly derivative. As you might expect, Glover's take on the suave Lando Calrissian (and his many capes) is the scene-stealer throughout.

And, finally, just because it's wonderful and awesome, here is a photo of Newton standing with Glover, the young Lando himself. He does a totally fine job of serving up a swagger and charm that feels like a believable precursor to '70s Harrison Ford, and his chemistry with Glover's Lando is a genuine joy to watch. "You know, there she is holding what looks like a weapon, and in a state of natural empowerment".

GLOVER: (As Lando Calrissian) I'm a lucky guy. But while it gets the trappings and appearances right, Solo never delivers on the promise of finding out why Han became who he was in A New Hope.

EHRENREICH: (As Han Solo) Since when do you know how to fly?

This is the best phase of the movie, with some lovely sequences explaining how Han got his surname, and, especially, how he came to meet his furry friend Chewbacca (once again inhabited by enormous Finnish basketball player Joonas Suotamo).

He tells his girlfriend Qi'ra (Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke) that he wants to be a pilot, the best in the galaxy. But perhaps the most encouraging thing one can say about "Solo" is that unlike "Rogue One", it not only leaves room for a possible sequel to this prequel, but finishes strongly enough that such a prospect seems enticing. The story takes forever to build up ahead of hyper-fuel, and it's not as if there's nothing going on - two separate heists, narrow escapes, lots of double-dealing.

With other characters like Woody Harrelson and Paul Bettany, they both played their parts well as Beckett and Dryden Vos, respectively.

Despite a troubled production, which included the firing of the movie's original directors and extensive re-shoots, director Ron Howard's finished product appears to have avoided potential disaster. How much of the turmoil is visible onscreen?

Not even the prospect of a Han Solo origin story stiffened it up.

The technical wizardry augments these scenes, as do the musical cues incorporated by composer John Powell, weaving in snippets of John Williams' earlier themes - most notably from "The Empire Strikes Back" - in a way that helps recapture the spirit of the original trilogy, at least during certain key moments.

Glover is great in the role, threatening to steal the picture from Ehrenreich, who is more of a vocal match for Ford than he is a physical one.

"Things do feel shaky at first, but there's spunk to Ehrenreich's delivery and, once he settles in, a twinkle in his eye", said Bob Mondello of National Public Radio.
