Michigan State Settles With Dr. Nassar Victims

  • The Latest Nassar victims to get ESPYS courage award

The settlement in principle was agreed to by Michigan State's board of trustees in a conference call Tuesday night, the statement said. We recognize the need for change on our campus and in our community around sexual assault awareness and prevention.

Larry Nassar's victims will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at this year's ESPYS. It also doesn't say how Michigan State will pay the bill.

"I'm very happy that we're done with litigation", said former gymnast Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to publicly accuse Nassar of sexual abuse more than 18 months ago. Any suggestion that the university engaged in a coverup is "simply false", a school statement said.

In addition to Nassar's role with Michigan State, he also served as a USA Gymnastics doctor.

Michigan State and lawyers for 332 victims announced Wednesday that they have reached a $500 million settlement.

That's certainly a big deal for victims; there are now more than 300 victims who have come forward, and given the $75 million set aside in the settlement for future victims, it's horrifying to think that there are likely many more out still out there. MSU offiicals said the school will pay the settlement from its budgets and then sue insurance companies to recoup the costs. Victims alleged that Michigan State covered up Nassar's abuse and ignored reports of sexual misconduct.

Nassar pleaded guilty to molesting women and girls under the guise that he was treating them for injuries. He is serving three prison sentences that will likely keep him locked up for life.

"My sisters and I have said from the beginning that coming forward was to push for accountability and needed reform, and there is much work left to be done". Nassar's work far away from campus was spelled out in his employment contract with Michigan State. At least one swimmer was among those to testify that Nassar had sexually abused them as children. He was so brazen that he sometimes molested patients in front of their parents, shielding the young girls with his body or a sheet.

Olympic gold medalists Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney say they were victims.

Other cases involved participants in soccer, figure skating, rowing, softball, cheerleading, wrestling, diving, dance, and track and field.

A lawyer for the survivors, John Manly, said, "This historic settlement came about through the bravery of more than 300 women and girls who had the courage to stand up and refuse to be silenced".

MSU paid nine law firms more than $11 million to defend the university in the lawsuits from the women and girls, according to documents the university released to the Lansing State Journal in response to public records requests.

Michigan State University confirms it is settling hundreds of lawsuits filed by survivors of Larry Nasser's sexual abuse for a half-billion dollars.

It did not resolve claims against USA Gymnastics, the US Olympic Committee, star gymnastics coaches Bela and Marta Karolyi, and others.
