Trump blames his Homeland Security chief for illegal immigration

The White House declined specific comment on whether Trump berated Nielsen, her supposed resignation letter and on whether Trump retained confidence in Nielsen, who took over at DHS in December. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security described the Times report as "false".

President Donald Trump walks across the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Thursday, May 10, 2018, as he returns from nearby Andrews Air Force Base, Md., following an evening trip to Elkhart, Ind., for a campaign rally. Nielsen was tapped to be secretary after serving with current White House Chief of Staff, John Kelly.

What Trump didn't note when conveying those orders, however, is that the US has a domestic and global legal obligation to process any immigrant who comes to its borders seeking asylum.

White House chief of staff John Kelly said he believes the vast majority of undocumented immigrants crossing the southern border into the U.S. do not assimilate well because they are poorly educated. Rather than direct her ire at the President, Nielsen used her platform to express her frustration with Congress and its lack of action in dealing with the issue.

Nielsen is responsible for those 20,000 border representatives who work in Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

At the meeting, Trump railed against her for failing to stop illegal border crossings. "Sessions sold her down the river", the source said. The blowup lasted more than 30 minutes, according to a person with knowledge of what transpired, as Trump's face reddened and he raised his voice, saying Nielsen needed to "close down" the border.

The Trump administration, under U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, has moved to revoke this special status and to expel tens of thousands of protected immigrants. In a Thursday statement, Nielsen reiterated her commitment to securing the country's porous borders, especially those along the Mexican border. At the meeting, both Nielsen and Attorney General Jeff Sessions tried in vain to explain to Donald Trump that the federal government can not completely shut down the border.

Trump was furious with Nielsen, telling her he didn't think she was doing enough to secure the border. More recently, however, those numbers have climbed back toward the level they were in the final years of the Obama administration-an intolerable equivalence for Trump. The president's anger was stoked by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who remarked that the Department of Homeland Security could just arrest people at the border, the source said.

Mostly, though, Nielsen struggled to get a word in, said one senior official.

According to the New York Times' report, Trump has been angry that Nielsen has been "resisting his direction that parents be separated from their children when families cross illegally into the United States". The president and his aides in the White House had been pushing a family separation policy for weeks as a way of deterring families from trying to cross the border illegally.
