Kelly on Undocumented Immigrants: 'They Don't Integrate Well, They Don't Have Skills'

  • Kelly: Vast majority of undocumented immigrants 'don't have skills'

Kelly shared his frustrations with media coverage at the White House, revealing a conversation with one reporter who called him their "worst nightmare" for drastically reducing leaks from administration staff.

They're not bad people.

Though Kelly has often been cited as one of the "adults in the room" helping to control Trump's worst impulses, Heilemann's comments make it clear that in fact, Kelly shares numerous president's biggest flaws.

"I wish I'd been here from Day 1", Kelly told NPR in a meeting that aired Friday.

The president's Chief of Staff, John Kelly, was asked whether the proble hangs like a cloud over the White House during an interview with NPR's John Burnett.

Kelly said the undocumented immigrants don't speak English and are "overwhelmingly rural people" from countries where "fourth-, fifth-, sixth-grade educations are kind of the norm". He added that he sympathized with their reasons for attempting to come to the U.S. but that he believed they wouldn't "easily assimilate into the United States".

However, he floated the idea of finding a path to citizenship for the more than 425,000 immigrants, many of whom have lived in the United States legally for decades under TPS. They dont speak English; obviously thats a big thing. And I sympathize with the reason. Kelly, asked if he ever seriously considered leaving his post, said simply, "No".

Kelly was responding to a question about Attorney General Jeff Sessions new "zero tolerance" policy for crossings at the border.

But Kelly indicated his support for a pathway to citizenship for immigrants now in the United States under Temporary Protected Status.

Before he took on the role of chief of staff, Kelly was the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Kelly said that he supported the idea of a pathway to citizenship for TPS immigrants who had lived in the United States for decades, but suggested that others should be sent home. "This is not the first time he's said it". "Fix the problem. Or as I said in some remarks just shut up and let us do our job", he said bluntly.
