A White House staffer had made the comment in response to McCain's opposition to President Trump's nominee to head the Central Intelligence Agency. McCain - a Navy officer who was captured in Vietnam after his aircraft crashed and was tortured as a prisoner of war - urged his Senate colleagues to oppose Haspel's nomination. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., tweeted about Sadler's remark, which came during a White House meeting on Thursday.

A White House official derisively dismissed John McCain's opposition to President Donald Trump's Central Intelligence Agency nominee in a closed-door staff meeting Thursday by saying that the senator from Arizona battling brain cancer is "dying anyway", according to another White House official with knowledge of the comment.

"And why the White House can't say, 'Look, we've spoken to her, we've told her we think this is inappropriate, we think we need to move on from this, this is not the way anyone in the White House ought to conduct themselves and then just move on.' But by refusing to even say what she said was hurtful, wrong, tasteless, you know, use whatever adjective you want, you sort of extend this story and of course the underlying story, which is that the president and John McCain don't get along".

At the White House press briefing Friday afternoon, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined multiple times to comment on Sadler's remark, and confirmed that Sadler still has a job at the White House.

Meghan McCain thanked the public for its support.

"We have a respect for all Americans and that is what we try to put forward in everything we do both in word and in action", Sanders said.

Her father is "all about character and bipartisanship and something greater than yourself", Meghan McCain said, before adding a stinging message to the critics: "Nobody's going to remember you". These people are nothing-burgers. I'm dying, you're dying, we're all dying.

"People have wondered when decency would hit rock bottom with this administration. It happened yesterday", Biden said in a striking statement. "Given this White House's trail of disrespect toward John and others, this staffer is not the exception to the rule; she is the epitome of it". "There are so many accolades I could heap on a John McCain".

In 2017, Trump was criticized for giving belated well-wishes to McCain after his cancer diagnosis.

Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., said Friday that Sadler's "denigrating" comments are "reprehensible".

Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa tweeted that the United States should "treat this war hero and his family with the civility and respect they deserve".

The White House on Friday refused either to acknowledge or disown a purported barb about Sen.

Sadler's comments drew bipartisan condemnation.

Ms Sadler's comments were reported the same day that a guest on Fox Business Network, retired Air Force Lieutenant General Thomas McInerney, suggested Mr McCain divulged critical information to the North Vietnamese after being tortured.

The attacks, remarkable for their bluntness, triggered swift reaction from across the political spectrum, with lawmakers demanding an apology from President Donald Trump.
