  • Kenyan dam bursts causing 'huge destruction' and deaths

At least 47 people have died after a dam on a commercial flower farm in Kenya's Rift Valley burst after weeks of torrential rain.

Water swept away numerous homes and businesses after breaking through the Patel Dam in Solai, about 150 kilometers northwest of Nairobi.

Close to 40 people were rescued from the mud and taken to hospitals on Thursday morning (Thursday night NZT) in operations by Kenya Red Cross and Nakuru County disaster management teams.

At least 100 people have died and almost 260,000 have been displaced by flooding in Kenya this month, the Kenyan Red Cross said.

"It was a sea of water".

Some residents said they heard an explosion before the dam collapsed and water swept away hundreds of homes, affecting more than 300 families.

"The search and rescue exercise is ongoing and more bodies have been retrieved", regional police chief Gideon Kibunjah told AFP. He was blind so he could not run. At least 39 people were rescued, the Red Cross said. "My other neighbours also died". There is another dam which is also overflowing which is looking risky.

In an earlier post on Twitter, Kinyanjui said the water had caused "huge destruction of both life and property".

The deluge has affected large parts of East Africa, destroying crops and killing farm animals after a severe drought which had sent food prices and inflation soaring and left millions in need of food aid. With the heavy seasonal rains the dams do not have an outlet, he said.

Police in Nakuru County said they found 11 bodies - including those of children - covered in mud at a coffee plantation close to the dam.

The Kenya Red Cross estimates that up to 500 families are affected in the tragedy described by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi as a 'disaster'.

State House, through its spokesperson Mr Manoah Esipisu on Thursday afternoon said that the government is assessing the damage and would issue a comprehensive statement upon receipt of full details.
