  • South Africa attack: Knifemen 'SLIT THROATS' of crowd in Durban - at least one dead

The three attackers slit people's throats, said an emergency responder, Reaction Unit South Africa.

He said there had been reports of prior attacks on mosques in the province.

The three attackers escaped in a Hyundai auto from the Imam Hussain mosque in Verulam town on the outskirts of the eastern port city.

A section of the mosque was set ablaze, according to several media reports.

The suspects then attacked three people before setting some of the mosque's rooms alight.

More details are awaited.

One victim later died, police said.

"The attackers managed to get out of the mosque".

"Fire services were on scene and put the blaze under control".

Rusa head Prem Balram said, when he arrived on the scene, he found two people outside with their throats slit. "One knife was left behind", Balram said, speaking from the scene. Nothing was taken from the mosque or from the victims, that's why we're saying it doesn't look like a robbery.

South Africa has not been a target for militant attacks of the kind that occur in some other African countries.

About 1.5 percent of the country's 55 million population is Muslim.

The attack came shortly ahead of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which begins around May 16. "We want our communities to live in harmony‚ practising their religions without fear‚" he said.
