Kelly's music from playlists

  • R. Kelly on Spotify

A key point in Spotify's R. Kelly move today is that it is not banning his music from the service but rather refusing to promote it in its popular playlists.

Spotify has announced that it will no longer actively promote R. Kelly's music.

"We do not censor content material due to an artist's or creator's habits, however we wish our editorial selections - what we select to programme - to mirror our values".

Kelly, the R&B singer who has been accused of extensive sexual misconduct dating back almost two decades, but whose actions have been the subject of renewed focus in the past year.

What do we consider "hate content?"

The rapper responded to the news via a reporter on Twitter by questioning what Spotify will do about other artists accused or convicted of crimes.

The company said on its website that when it's alerted to content that violates its policy, the company may remove it from playlists or refrain from promoting it. Time's Up has neglected to speak with any of the women who welcome R. Kelly's support, and it has rushed to judgment without the facts.

R. Kelly performs in concert at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on September 25, 2015. Later on Thursday, a Spotify representative told The New York Times that the company's playlists had also removed the rapper XXXtentacion, who is now facing charges in Florida that include aggravated battery of a pregnant woman.

Over 8.5 million people listen to Kelly's music each month. We also built an internal content monitoring tool, Spotify AudioWatch, which identifies content on our platform that has been flagged as hate content on specific worldwide registers.

Spotify's algorithmically-produced playlists like Discover Weekly are great at introducing you to similar music to what you've already listened to, but what they're not so great at is expanding your horizons by introducing you to new bands and genres.

Guess that behavior isn't flying anymore, and Spotify is taking steps to de-emphasize the artists on its very powerful platform. It lets the music-streaming service ban or bury music or artists it judges to be "hateful", whether it be songs that incite violence or artists whose conduct it won't tolerate. XXXTentacion denies the allegations.

Kelly's team recently issued a statement tackling the accusations directly, saying it is "unjust and off-target" and an "attempted public lynching of a Black man".

Kelly, one of the most successful R&B singers of the past 20 years, is the target of an online #MuteRKelly boycott campaign that gained new attention last week when it was adopted by the Time's Up anti-sexual harassment movement.
