  • Google IO 2018: Watch Jarvis (Google Assistant) make a call to book an appointment for you

One of the most important announcements that came on this year's developer's conference was definitely related to Google's mobile operating system Android P. Google is also unveiling ways to let you issue multiple commands without having to say "Hey Google" each time. If Google Assistant is able to carry a conversation to a convincing degree, isn't it dishonest to mislead another human into thinking they are speaking to a living, breathing person? During the keynote, Pichai showed an example how the digital assistant can actually make a haircut appointment with a time slot and day given to Google initially.

Another major upgrade comes in Google Assistant, which can now talk to ordinary people and make basic things like booking an appointment, making reservations at the restaurants and more. Users can also ask Google Assistant to access their Google accounts, check their schedules and even view photos saved on Google Photos. The assistant's intonation was flawless, with the machine throwing in some natural "umm" s and "hmmm" s before it answered.

Sundar Pichai, the company CEO, took center stage to demo its latest innovation on voice-based services.

He further announced to launch "smart compose" to all Gmail users this month and said the users will have someone completing their sentences.

The new system promises better battery life and brightness adjustments with the help of artificial intelligence.

It would also teach children to use polite language when interacting with the Google Assistant's "Pretty Please feature". Soon, though, Google Assistant could be calling businesses on your behalf and setting up appointments. The product was first incorporated in the iPhone via iOS 5 released in 2011 and then made available on a few different platforms.

In fact, in 2018, artificial intelligence is already doing some useful things, such as being used in phone keyboards to help you work out what movies to watch on Netflix to working out suggestions in the Music Genome Project operated by Pandora. The upgrade is an outcome of an event that the tech giants like Google are under an accusation of endorsing fake news and hampering the business model of traditional news publishers.

As the Google I/O is basically a developer's conference, a special focus is also put on making the software that powers Google technologies more smarter.

The search giant aims to make Google Assistant and other services so useful that people can not live without them - or the search results that drive its advertising business. The company has published a blog post going into more detail about how Duplex works.
