California May Require Solar Panel Installations On Every New Home

  • California expected to mandate solar panels for new homes

The California Energy Commission will vote on a plan Wednesday called as California's new energy mandate which will require solar panels to be built virtually into every new home, condos, and apartment buildings from 2020 onward. According to reports circulating about a California Energy Commission (CEC) meeting taking place on Tuesday, California's solar levels might get a swift kick in the rear. In addition to single-family homes, they would apply to new multifamily buildings of three stories or less. The measure is meant to accelerate the adoption of solar power in the residential sector, which could help California achieve its environmental goals more quickly. This plan would further expand solar opportunity in our state by including solar in new home construction when installation and financing costs are both at their lowest. It will establish the state's new energy standards, which aims to make the sources of renewable energy a requirement for new homes beginning 2020. This initiative may be obsolete, as net zero homes would still draw power from the energy grid in certain circumstances.

Bill Watt, a California homebuilder and design consultant, who is also former president of the Orange County Building Industry Association, isn't so sure that the added requirements aren't going to sabotage the housing market. Structures with roofs that are too small for standard-sized solar installations are likewise exempted from the proposed standards.

"Zero net energy isn't enough", said Andrew McAllister, one of five state energy commissioners voting on the new homebuilding standards. Solar accounts for about USD 14,000 to USD 16,000 of that cost, with increased insulation and more efficient windows, appliances, lighting, and heating accounting for another USD 10,000 to USD 15,000. Over the course of about 25 years - or the average solar panel lifespan - the green-energy products could save owners anywhere from $50,000 to $60,000. They're never going to reach that net-zero goal.

"We're not building enough housing already", Watt said. Will the last person to leave California please turn off the lights?
