Bandits kill 45, burn village in Kaduna

Barely one week after the massacre if Local miners at JANRUWA, in Birnin-Gwari local government area of Kaduna State, today (Saturday) around 2:30pm, armed bandits killing 27 people mostly children at Gwaska village.

Police Inspector General Ibrahim Idris affirmed the band its invaded Gwaska Saturday, fighting neighborhood shield forces shielding the community of about 3,000 men and women. Majority are even women and children.

The Kaduna State Government has commiserated with the people of Birnin Gwari following fatal attacks on the area by bandits. They also burnt many houses in the community.

A statement by the Birnin-Gwari Vanguard for Security and Good Governance said: "So far, about 45 dead bodies were evacuated by the fearless vigilantes and volunteers, numbering 500, with the assistance of a handful of soldiers this afternoon (yesterday)".

The Kaduna State police command has not confirmed the attack as at the time of filing this report. Numerous villagers, especially men, ran into the bush, leaving women and children behind.

Survivors mostly women now at Doka district said, most of those killed were volunteers who tried to defend the vulnerable villagers from the attack.


Birnin Gwari has witnessed several attacks by bandits leading to the death of scores of people including soldiers and police officers.

But as at press time, he was yet to do so.

Children under age of 10 were also among the rows of dead bodies in Gwaska, in the Birnin Gwari area in Kaduna state. "The government has sent a message of condolence to the people of Birnin Gwari Emirate", the statement said.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has been criticised for failing to curb the violence, which is becoming a key election issue ahead of presidential polls in 2019.

Following this latest attack, Governor Nasir El-Rufai on Sunday evening announced that the federal government has agreed to deploy a permanent army battalion in the troubled area.
