Just Thursday, the president's newest lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, announced that the administration had gotten Kim Jong Un to agree to a release.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Trump said "a lot of things have happened" with regards to United States citizens reportedly being held in North Korea.

The White House is denying a published report that President Donald Trump is seeking options to reduce the US troop presence on the Korean peninsula. "But if a peace treaty is signed, the US troops are bound to peter out". "North Korea watches us as much as we follow North Korea". It remains unclear if Kim has relaxed that demand as he turns to diplomacy with adversaries after a year of escalating tensions.

Six South Koreans are also being held in North Korea, but their status remains uncertain despite an otherwise successful inter-Korean summit last Friday.

But in recent months relations between the Koreas have warmed dramatically, with Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in pledging at their summit last week to rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons.

Trump also said then that the Southeast Asian city state of Singapore was also in the running to play host.

"We now have a date".

He said: "We now have a date and we have a location".

Jung Pak, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst, said the danger for the United States in Trump's public flirtations with removing troops is that he is giving up leverage to Kim in advance of the summit.

President Donald Trump is expected to meet Kim in the coming weeks.

Trump, who has hinted at imminent news about three Americans detained in North Korea, once more sounded an upbeat note regarding their fate.

"A lot of things have already happened with regard to the hostages", Trump said.

"Reduced troop levels are not meant to be a bargaining chip in Mr Trumps talks with Mr Kim about his weapons programme", the daily said quoting unnamed administration official. Still, it would be a quixotic move as he enters into negotiations with Kim.
