Elon Musk goes on Twitter to defend his freaky earnings call behavior

  • Elon Musk has had to contend with production problems with the Model 3 car

Musk interrupted the analyst and dismissed his question, indicating that "boring" questions are "not cool".

If Elon Musk has any regrets about dissing some pesky stock analysts in a call this week to discuss Tesla's latest earnings, it's not showing up in his Twitter feed. But the two have "hold" or "neutral" ratings on the stock, according to Thomson Reuters data. "It's actually thinking they know more about Autopilot than they do, like quite a significant understanding of it".

I asked Musk how he thinks it will compare to the 2013 short squeeze that followed his 2012 warning to the shorts.

Musk suggested that the two questioners he ignored on the Q1 call "are sell-side analysts who represent a short-seller thesis, not investors". The wisdom behind the hedging strategy is that as these huge, influential stocks go, so does the market - so taking a short position in them means protecting against an index drop. "We're going to go as long as there are good questions to answer", he said of the question and answer phase of the call. (TSLA) sank this week on concerns over its most recent earnings call, which some on the Street said was the most freaky they have ever experienced.

Speaking at the Kase Learning Short Selling Conference in New York, Stanphyl Capital Partners founder Mark Spiegel criticized Tesla's financials and said they are "worsening" under heavy competition from luxury automakers.

As for the Model 3 reservations question, he described that as "absurd" on Twitter.

"This is a financial analyst call, this is not a TED talk", the analyst said, adding that Musk's behavior was concerning because it shows he's not interested in the financial side of his "visionary" projects.

Tesla tore through $745.3 million in cash in the quarter, due largely to the slow production ramp-up of the Model 3 mass-market electric sedan.

He explained that the question from Bernstein's Sacconaghi was "boneheaded" because the topic had already been covered in a shareholder letter.
