  • Gerrard moving to Rangers would be good for the game, insists McInnes

The 43-year-old was sacked in the fallout of the Gers' 5-0 Old Firm demolition at the hands of Glasgow Celtic at Parkhead on Sunday; from which Brendan Rodgers' men claimed their seventh successive league title.

Rangers named Steven Gerrard as their number one managerial target and are confident they are closing in for a deal as he looks to make the club's transfer budget a certainty, according to Sky Sports.

The former Liverpool and England captain, now in charge of the under-18s side at Anfield, said on BT Sport on Tuesday night that he has held initial discussions with the Scottish Premiership club.

Numerous former coaches and team-mates of Gerrard have had their say on the ex-England star taking up the role at Ibrox. I've held positive talks with them.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who has been in a coaching role with the Anfield club's youth set-up this season, was first linked with the manager's post at Rangers last week. "I'm busy for a couple of days now but I'll pick it up on Thursday and I'll see if we can progress it".

Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson have been handed the reins for the final three matches of the Ladbrokes Premiership season as Rangers aim to leapfrog Aberdeen and secure second place.

"In terms of the size of the club and knowing Steven pretty well, I think it's a great opportunity for him", Lampard told TalkSPORT. He's not going to go there and be naive enough to think all of a sudden "I'm going to turn it around".
