Westworld season 2: 6 questions we have after episode 2 Reunion

  • 'Westworld' on a quest for meaning of not-life

Westworld is the very definition of serialized story-telling in an era of television in which audiences have miles more patience than they used to.

- Charlotte Hale is sent to Delos to have Ford removed because he's acting like a insane person, and more importantly, make sure all of Ford's work doesn't go to waste in some sort of park-wide massacre or something. But this one was different, because it was not Bernard asking the questions, but his human predecessor, and because they weren't situated in one of the subterranean Westworld board rooms, but in a hotel room far above some glittering Asian-looking city. Even as both Robert and his hosts continually told William that the maze wasn't for him, the culmination of that plot was both satisfying and frustrating depending on which character you liked better.

William now describes it as his greatest mistake - but what could this weapon do? Not satisfied with merely taking the park, Dolores is determined to lay siege to the outside world as well. The episode was written by Roberto Patino and Ron Fitzgerald, with Richard J. Lewis-who directed the first episode of the second season-at the helm behind the camera.

Two scenes really deepen this question in "Reunion". This is the way Westworld should be.

MiB: For most, this season screams: "Be careful what you wish for".

Among the many twists at the end of the first season of "Westworld" was the revelation of William's ruthlessness and the idea that he hadn't merely become the Man in Black in the park, but that the essential elements of his character were there all along.

While we've seen much of Maeve's dark journey, "Reunion" showed young William (Jimmi Simpson) fully hardening into Man in Black William (Ed Harris), Teddy (James Marsden) learning the truth about himself, and, though we've seen plenty of Dolores' (Evan Rachel Wood) violent ways, her episode 2 arc started in a place of innocence and wonder, but landed in a pool of blood. Delos doesn't see much point in investing in the park so people can live out outlandish fantasies. We saw people die. "You didn't make me interested in you; you made me interested in me..." William's transition into the Man in Black was nothing more than a montage and a nifty scene transition with his trusty black hat. If humans were repeatedly killing the park's sophisticated androids in the name of research, or as some sort of preparation for modern warfare, then at least there might be some sort of objective to their behavior, even if that goal wasn't a terribly attractive one. It's true that Westworld is the only place where William feels truly alive, but it's absolutely necessary to show the consequences of this transformation in his own life.

So, what do we know about the Valley Beyond?

We'll see how Delos's use of the park influences the rest of the season. She shows Teddy all the times he's been killed, and watching himself die again and again at the hands of guests sends him into a rage, and he nearly kills a tech. Billy the white hat is gone forever.

- Some time later (it's unclear) William talks to Dolores in Mesa Hub about the "question no one has ever even dreamed of asking", and shows her a big terraforming project now underway.

Later on, we get a more willful moment when Dolores tickles the ivories with Gershwin's "The Man I Love" as she watches William play flawless husband/father to his wife and child.

William's pitch succeeds, and Logan is destroyed. Empty or not, it still has value to Dolores. What does she intend to do once she breaks out of the park?

It takes a moment to figure out where we are in the show's opening, and when, thanks to Jeffrey Wright doing double duty as Arnold and Bernard. And "Reunion" reveals something even worse than mere moral emptiness: the real objective for the park and the reason William (Jimmi Simpson) was able to persuade Delos to invest so heavily in it. To do that they must forcibly wake the hosts up from their collective dream. William tells Dolores in a flashback. I'll just say I immediately had a craving for fried chicken.

HBO has released the Westworld Season 2 Episode 3 trailer, offering a taste of what's to come next week in the twisty sci-fi series.
