North Korea will SHUT nuke test site next month

  • Behind Korean progress on peace, you'll find the careful strategies of President Moon

The meeting, the first of its kind for a sitting USA president, will focus on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, Trump said.

"If we maintain frequent meetings and build trust with the United States and receive promises for an end to the war and a non-aggression treaty, then why would be need to live in difficulty by keeping our nuclear weapons?"

Kim said there were two additional, larger tunnels that remain "alive and well" at the Punggye-ri test site beyond the existing one, which experts have said had collapsed after repeated explosions, rendering much of the site useless.

He said he hoped for successful negotiations on the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

To facilitate future cross-border cooperation, Kim pledged to scrap the unique time zone Pyongyang created in 2015. Pyongyang time is now 30 minutes ahead of Seoul, a change instituted by Kim in 2015.

The Korean War will be formally declared over after 68 years, the North and South said in the inter-Korean summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the South's President Moon Jae-in.

Mr Trump has said he is looking forward to the meeting with Mr Kim and it "should be quite something". Moon gave Trump credit in January.

Ahead of an historic meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump expected within the next three to four weeks, Kim told South Korea's president that two tunnels at the nuclear test site are still in good condition, playing down worldwide speculation that the site was so badly damaged by nuclear explosions that it can no longer be used.

Trump's aides will then say that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize more than Obama did. While no specific clarification has been made on the denuclearization of North Korea, (not Korea Peninsula), and no reference to human rights abuses, there is hope that Trump will be "bold" enough to whisper these in Kim's ears when he meets him later in the year.

Pompeo noted that the administration's objective is "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization" with North Korea.

Abe also said Moon conveyed to Kim the Japanese prime minister's ideas about the issue as well as relations between Tokyo and Pyongyang. The real test of Kim's commitment for denuclearization will be measured in the level of transparency he provides to weapons inspectors and whether he will take steps to dismantle his nuclear infrastructure. Now, I think most people know that the North Korean media, which is tightly controlled by the government, reported extensively on the summit.

A state dinner proceeded in an "amicable atmosphere overflowing with feelings of blood relatives", KCNA noted. The agreement also includes language about ending all hostile acts between North and South Korea, cooperating on humanitarian issues, and transitioning the demilitarized zone (DMZ) into a peace zone.

"It's never gone this far". This enthusiasm for them wanting to make a deal ... It declared North Korea a "world-level politico-ideological and military power" and said it would contribute to building "a world without nuclear weapons".

The diplomatic climate has changed dramatically this year, as Kim has ended his global seclusion, reaching out to South Korea, the USA, and China. "The public conversation should now shift from speculation on whether North Korea would consider denuclearization to how South Korea and the United States can advance this denuclearization pledge in concrete steps in light of North Korea's reciprocal demands for concrete steps toward an eventual peace agreement".

Mattis has said the U.S. is "optimistic right now that there's opportunity here that we have never enjoyed since 1950" and any progress will be up to the diplomats.
