  • Modi in China LIVE UPDATES The two leaders met at a lakeside resort in central China on Friday

"On the issue of the India-China boundary question, the two leaders endorsed the work of the special representatives in their efforts to find a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement", he said.

Terming the informal meeting between Mr. Xi and Mr. Modi "a success and a milestone", Mr. Kong said, this meeting was not meant to solve specific problems, but the main aim was to strengthen communication exchanges, provide strategic guidance to the relations, and increase mutual trust between the leaders.

The meeting is seen as an effort to improve bilateral ties between the two countries which had weakened because of the Doklam standoff previous year. The two leaders agreed that both sides have the maturity and wisdom to handle differences through peaceful discussion.

They also agreed that proper management of the bilateral relationship will be conducive for the development and prosperity of the region, and will create the conditions for the "Asian Century".

Modi thanked Xi for meeting him twice outside Beijing, telling the Chinese leader: "This in itself shows love and affection towards India".

Chinese President Xi Jinping and India´s Prime Minister Narendra Modi walk along the East Lake in Wuhan, China, April 28, 2018.

Prior to the Wuhan summit, Beijing had invited Indian officials who deal with Afghanistan and had reportedly proposed both sides getting involved in a joint development project.

The minister said that Mr. Xi emphasised that the problems between China and India were "temporary" but the cooperation would be "everlasting".

They also discussed ways to promote greater cultural and people-to-people exchanges and agreed to explore establishing new mechanisms in this direction.

Both leaders also talked about the importance of balanced and sustainable trade ties between India and China.

China is India's largest trading partner although India has not yet signed up to President Xi's signature foreign policy plan to build a new "Silk Road" of infrastructure and trade links between China and Eurasia. China claims the strategically important region, but India says it belongs to ally Bhutan. One is the Xi-Modi summit in Wuhan, China, which is seeking to narrow down the chasm between the world's two most populous countries and the second the informal summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in on the border of the two Koreas. Also speaking in the backdrop of the global economy, Mr Xi said cooperation between China and India would be a factor for peace and stability in the world. The two fought a brief but bloody war in 1962 and have a history of mutual distrust. China has repeatedly blocked India's bid to designate Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN.

Thereafter, the two leaders held delegation-level talks that "went well beyond the budgeted time" as Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale put it at a media briefing here on Saturday.
