  • Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya said “I am a lawyer and I am an informant,” in an NBC interview

Just when things couldn't seem worse for President Trump and the Russia investigation, the sinkhole grows wider, as Natalia V. Veselnitskaya, the lawyer who met with Donald Trump Jr. about dirt on Hillary Clinton, may be a Russian informant as reported by the New York Times.

The Times reported that Natalia Veselnitskaya detailed in an interview with NBC News, set to air Friday, her previously undisclosed relationship with Yuri Chaika, Russia's prosecutor general.

Veselnitskaya said in an interview with NBC previous year that she received a phone call and was asked whether she had information on the Clinton campaign's finances: "I never knew who else would be attending the meeting, all I knew was that Donald Trump Jr. wanted to meet with me". "Since 2013, I have been actively communicating with the office of the Russian prosecutor general".

When Donald Trump Jr. took an opposition research meeting in June 2016, he thought he was meeting with a private Russian lawyer who could provide damaging information about Hillary Clinton.

The revelation has come to the surface as Mikhail B. Khodorkovsky, a leading opponent of President Vladimir V. Putin, obtained the emails and forwarded them to NBC News' Richard Engel.

The emails the Dossier organization have suggest Veselnitskaya worked closely with a top official in Russia's Prosecutor-General's Office to fend off a US fraud case against one of her clients. Veselnitskaya was meeting with Donald Trump Jr.

The emails show Veselnitskaya worked closely with a top official in Russia's prosecutor general's office to fend off a USA fraud case against one of her clients in 2014.

But Veselnitskaya's stunning admission directly counters testimony she submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee in November, in which she claimed no connection to the Kremlin.

In that meeting, Veselnitskaya said she discussed the Russian adoption ban with Donald Trump Jr.

"I shared information with" Chaika, she told the newspaper, in the course of her investigation into a hedge-fund manager who was a driving force behind the Magnitsky Act, a US sanctions law that locked certain Russians out of their overseas funds, among other punishments.

Goldstone told Donald Trump Jr. that "the crown prosecutor of Russia" was offering "to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father".

Mueller is investigating Russia's interference and possible collusion with the Trump campaign in the 2016 presidential election.
