The CDC says no deaths attributed to the outbreak have been reported. The outbreak has been traced to that area, but the exact source hasn't been pinpointed.

The Yuma region provides most of the romaine sold in the USA during the winter.

And while the tainted romaine lettuce is believed to have actually stemmed from the Yuma area, "item labels frequently do not determine growing areas; so toss out any romaine lettuce if you're unsure about where it was grown", the company stated in its caution.

While chopped romaine sold either alone or in mixed salads was originally thought to be the culprit, last week the warning was expanded to include all types of romaine - chopped, whole heads and hearts of romaine, organic and baby romaine, and any salads or mixed salads that contain romaine.

"We have many lines of evidence suggesting to us right now that all of these illnesses are connected in some way through romaine grown in the Yuma region [of Arizona]", Matthew Wise, the CDC deputy branch chief for Outbreak Response, said during a Friday news briefing.

Pennsylvania leads the country with 18 cases, while California is second with 13 cases, according to the CDC.

So far, a total of 98 people in 22 states have gotten sick after eating romaine lettuce.

A nasty strain of bacteria that can cause severe illness is what's driving a food poisoning outbreak linked to romaine lettuce, health officials said Friday.

To date, Marler Clark, the food safety law firm, has been contacted by over 50 people, 7 of whom have contracted HUS.

"She's a teenager. She was trying to cut out junk food and be healthier", her mother, Tiffany Halley, told The Washington Post. Within two days, she was doubled over in pain and having bloody stools and diarrhea. By April 10, the CDC had issued its first announcement about the E. coli illness outbreak.

"The family reported that they have not traveled out of state recently, suggesting that the family's exposure to E. coli was local", the blog says. Ten people have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, including three children. Two of the patients, including a child under the age of 5, were temporarily hospitalized. The teenager stayed in the ICU for eight days. The teenager was still in the hospital on Wednesday, and doctors said it could take three months for her blood count to rise to a normal level, Halley said. Of the 87 patients the CDC has good information on, 46 (53 percent) have required hospitalization, the agency noted.

"This has been an absolute nightmare", said Halley, 36.
