UK: May "could lose her job" if she backtracks on Customs Union

  • EXCLUSIVE: Theresa May insists Britain WILL leave customs union post-Brexit

She said: "It is not pointless, it allows people to express their feelings about the debate".

Prime Minister Theresa May doesn't really have a choice, the bank's PowerPoint slideshow says.

May's spokesman said earlier on Monday the European Union withdrawal bill was the best way of providing "the smoothest possible Brexit".

Meanwhile, tensions in the Cabinet have intensified with May facing calls from Brexit-supporting ministers to ditch any plan for a customs deal with the European Union following their concerns she is prepared to strike a compromise arrangement.

Thursday's vote is nonbinding, but it could flush out Conservative supporters of a closer customs relationship ahead of an expected crunch vote on the matter, which is expected when the Trade Bill returns to the House of Commons in the next few weeks.

But in a strongly-worded statement Mrs May's spokesman said: "We are leaving the customs union and not joining a customs union.' The UK would be 'free to sign our own trade deals".

The reports sparked speculation that Brussels is trying to edge the United Kingdom into remaining in some form of customs union with the EU - something which committee Brexiteers regard as unacceptable, as it would prevent Britain from forging new trade deals elsewhere in the world.

Steven Woolfe dismissed talk of a possible second Brexit referendum vote because it would hand "dignity to those on the Remain side".

So May would have a dilemma: does she continue to maintain her red lines on Brexit, or does she start to recognize her political weakness and make concessions?

"Legal backstop option -. keeping Northern Ireland in the customs union", the deck says.

"I am pretty confident that that will be defeated when the vote does come, not todays vote by the way which is pretty meaningless".

And there was a third defeat for ministers, consequential to the previous reverses, retaining the right of legal action from any failure to comply with the general principles of European Union law.

Voting was 316 to 245, majority 71, to carry over most of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights into domestic law post-Brexit. There are some real challenges there, but I can do this. Conservative MPs do not want to risk another election.

There is also a cold, hard calculation that Conservative MPs can make.

But on Thursday lunchtime it went from bad to worse when she raised the prospect of Britain staying in the European Union customs union - before issuing a clarification on Twitter within the hour. This May's senior consultants now secretly yield that a U-turn could be unavoidable with one supposedly telling a gathering a month ago that the head administrator and her best group won't cry into the brew on the off chance that they are compelled to reconsider cutting traditions ties with the EU.
