Throw out your chopped romaine lettuce — CDC ALERT

  • Throw Out Your Romaine Lettuce Because It Could Be Contaminated With E. Coli

The CDC says if you have store-bought chopped romaine lettuce at home including salads and salad mixes don't eat it, throw it away.

Fifty-three people have fallen ill, with 31 hospitalized, as an outbreak of an E. coli strain spreads to more states nationwide.

Don't eat any romaine lettuce coming from the Yuma, Arizona growing region- that's the new warning out Friday from the Centers for Disease Control after a multi-state E. coli outbreak is being linked to romaine lettuce grown in that region. The heads of romaine lettuce each ate where all traced back to the Yuma region.

Obviously, if you grow your own romaine lettuce or know exactly where it was grown (and it's not anywhere near Yuma, Arizona) feel free to continue to indulge in the leafy vegetable to your heart's content.

No deaths have been reported, the CDC said.

Nine more hospitalizations have been reported, including two people who developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

ADHS and FDA are also advising people to confirm, before they eat romaine lettuce from a restaurant or a grocery store, that it is not from the Yuma growing region.

Stay away from romaine lettuce. This outbreak is different from one that sickened 66 people and killed one person across North America in late 2017 and early 2018. There have not been any reported E. coli cases in Maine, New Hampshire or MA.

Some retailers, including Sam's Club and Walmart, have recalled romaine lettuce from their stores as a precautionary measure, even though no brand name has been identified with the outbreak.

This investigation is ongoing, and CDC will provide updates when more information is available. If you find yourself sick, write down what you've eaten, contact your doctor and report your illness to your local health department.

Most E. coli are harmless and actually are an important part of a healthy human intestinal tract. The complaint filed on Fraser's behalf lists almost 20 outbreaks from 1993 to 2011 that mostly involved romaine lettuce.
